The health and safety of our people is of paramount importance to ARYZTA. ARYZTA pursues comprehensive internal safety management procedures including policy manuals, verification of regulatory compliance, risk assessments, individual site action plans, safety audits, training, formal accident investigation and the provision of occupational health services. ARYZTA also maintains a strong focus on the use of key performance indicators, external, auditing and achieving exacting external health and safety accreditation for operations.

Policies & Guidelines
Global Employee Code of Conduct, signed by every employee, includes:
- ARYZTA’s Non-Discrimination Policy
- Guarantee of Freedom of Association
- Anti-Bribery & Corruption Policies
- All operations are assessed for risks related to corruption
- Conducted training with mid- and senior-level employees on anti-corruption policies and there are no incidents that have occurred
- ARYZTA’s Whistleblower Program
- Prohibition of forced or slave labor
- Political involvement policy
- ARYZTA makes no contributions to any political party or affiliation
- Employees are trained on human rights policies, sexual harassment, slavery, anti-corruption and human trafficking and other aspects that are relevant
- ARYZTA has had no grievances regarding human rights in our operations
- ARYZTA has had no legal actions for anti-competitive behavior, anti-trust or monopoly practices. As such, no significant fines have been assessed for non-compliance with any laws or regulations
ARYZTA’s Corporate Health & Safety Policy states that the highest priority is to maintain and exemplify a healthy and safe working environment. It includes:
- Compliance with all applicable health and safety laws, as well as ARYZTA’s often higher company standards
- Ensuring all employees (including temporary workers), contractors, sub-contractors, and visitors are aware of, trained and competent to carry out their safety responsibilities
- Elimination and minimization of risk in the design, operation, and maintenance of our facilities
- Improvement of operations through employee involvement, continual performance measurement, and initiating appropriate corrective and preventative actions where appropriate
- Focus on safe working and actively participating in health and safety improvement efforts
- Demonstration of ARYZTA’s values and commitment to health and safety in communications, planning and business decisions
ARYZTA’s Child Labor Policy covers the following:
- Compliance with all established government regulations and standards
- Recognizes and supports the United Nations “Rights of the Child”
- Prohibits hiring anyone under the age of 15
- These policies apply to temporary employees along with ARYZTA employees

Training/Results
- ARYZTA utilises web-based training focusing on different key areas of our operations such as people and food safety, critical to quality practices, safe use of chemicals for equipment cleaning, and daily practices to ensure a safe and healthy workplace.

- In North America ARYZTA implemented “Excellence in Supervision” training in for all ARYZTA front line leaders. In 2015 ARYZTA successfully completed training for a total of 11 bakeries and 202 ARYZTA leaders.

People safety results
In 2015, ARYZTA completed 100% of comprehensive internal safety and security assessments at all North American and European bakery locations to ensure a safe and healthy working environment to our employees. To continually improve the safety of our people in 2015, ARYZTA focused on four areas to reduce injury frequency and severity:
- Engineering investment into eliminating hazardous conditions. In 2015, ARYZTA spent over €3 million on direct and indirect safety related capital projects.
- Education. ARYZTA has a comprehensive training program for People Safety and Food Safety through a standardized training calendar. Last year, ARYZTA employees in North America and Europe completed 175,000 hours of documented training and documented recognition testing on core safety policy and expectations.
- Enforcement of the safety expectation. North America: In 2015, ARYZTA began tracking safety discipline, where supervisors observe potentially unsafe actions. In support of this, bakery supervisors issued 132 safety alerts. In Europe last year ARYZTA had 200 safety alerts.
- Engagement of employees, both informally and formally, helps to create awareness and avoid injuries and lost work days. All bakeries have a health & safety committee comprised of management and workers that monitors and advise on health and safety related issues.
ARYZTA uses an industry standard measure for employee safety, called the Safety Index.
The index combines the following:
- Recordable Injury Rate – Number of Recordable Injuries divided by Hours Worked
- Lost Time Injury Rate – Number of Lost Time Injuries divided by Hours Worked
- Severity Rate – Number of Lost Work Days divided by Hours Worked
